Thriving with Invisible Disabilities

Every day, countless people face hidden battles. For Lawrence Autar, a staff member at Interact Australia (Interact), life is a journey of perseverance despite his ‘invisible disability.’

Lawrence has sarcoidosis, a chronic inflammatory condition that can flare up without warning, leaving him physically drained. He also lives with attention deficit disorder and depression, adding complexity to his daily life. “Some days are harder than others, but the hardest part is that people can’t always see what you’re going through,” Lawrence said.

Seven years ago, a severe sarcoidosis flare-up left Lawrence unable to work or pay rent in Sydney. “It was one of the lowest points of my life. The next thing I knew, I was in an Interact office in Queensland using Disability Employment Services.”

Interact, part of the IntoWork Group, recognised Lawrence’s resilience and potential. They offered him a position as a Recruitment Partner when he needed it most. With their support, Lawrence not only regained his footing but has thrived, staying employed for the past six years.

The IntoWork Group, through its businesses like Interact, is committed to an inclusive workforce. They employ many individuals with disabilities and provide specialised services to address their unique needs.

Lawrence’s experience highlights the importance of a supportive work environment, especially for those with health challenges. “The IntoWork Group has supported me as much as they can. My condition could deteriorate if I didn’t stay on top of it. Their support and flexibility are so important,” he said.

Drawing from his past, Lawrence uses his experiences to help others. Living with an invisible disability has taught him compassion and patience. “When I open up to clients about my journey and overcoming my illness to get back into work, it gives them confidence.”

For Interact’s CEO, Jamie Barden, understanding invisible disabilities improves service for participants. “He continues to push forward, drawing on his own experiences to support others. As a Recruitment Partner, he has helped many people with disabilities, injuries, and illnesses find meaningful work,” Mr. Barden said.

“Sharing my story isn’t just about me—it’s about raising awareness for all the people who live with invisible disabilities every day,” Lawrence says. “You never know what someone is going through. A little kindness and understanding can make a big difference.”
